“But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.”
Ephesians 2:13 (NLT)
Our world is noisy, our thoughts are loud, and the demands of motherhood are a familiar (and often chaotic) song on repeat. The moments of peace and solitude are rare, and our overstimulated minds can wander to places that have us guessing if we are doing this whole mama thing right. Does this sound familiar, friend?
It was over a decade ago that I transitioned from a full time career woman into a brand new mother. I immediately felt the pain of unevaluated progress and the security of a supervisor. It was almost like I was looking around trying to find out who was in charge…only to find that it was me and I was underqualified. As an employee, periodic check-ins with my boss would clearly confirm my direction or provide the guidance needed to ensure we met our goals. The raising of a human doesn’t come with such luxuries. No baby is high fiving their mama for a diaper change completed in record time. No performance evaluation is submitted with “needs improvement” notes for deciphering new grunts and groans. We are simply winging it.
Then the world cries out from our phones. The satisfaction of approval is only a post away. A desire for affirmation disguised as an update brings in the response we long for, the response that can keep us in the addictive loop of earthly approval. While social media can be a beautiful addition to our lives, it can become a dangerous distraction from the important work before us, the work of mothering.
Our true audience is small and closer than a whisper. Our sincere audience begs us to lead a quiet life and stay away from the fray of the world. This audience, God and the people within our home, help us refine the mission of our motherhood. Making a quiet noise for the kingdom of Heaven may not get praise, likes, or re-shared as on Facebook but the impact we’re having on our family is eternal.
When we keep the end in mind with our motherhood, it helps us celebrate the quiet noise and the silent mastery. It is not about our glory, or even the glory of our children. Our mission and motherhood as Christians is all for the glory of God.
But when Christ is at the center, when dishes, laundry, work, is my song of thanks to him, joy rains. -Ann Voskamp
