Presence Shifts Perspective

Then the Lord said to Jacob, ‘Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.’”

Genesis 31:3 (ESV)

Back and forth, then back and forth again.

I watched my toddler son, Luke, walk with confidence to the edge of the swimming pool, look down into the wavy water, then turn around and run back to where he started. My husband and I cheered him on and shouted encouragement from the side of the pool.

“You can do it, buddy!”

“You’ve got this!”

“Go, go, go!”

Still no jumping. After several minutes of this poolside back-and-forth dance, Luke faced me and said, “Mom! Hold my hand!”

I walked up to Luke without hesitation, held his right hand with my left, counted to three, and jumped feet-first into the cold water. When he came up for air smiling, Luke discovered that jumping into the pool wasn’t as scary as he once thought. The presence of his parent, shifted his perspective, and the same is true when it comes to our identity as daughters of God.

The presence of our Heavenly Father shifts our perspective.

I don’t know about you, but as a mom, I need to be reminded of the promise of His presence often.

When I pray over my family.

When I feel alone.

When I’m completely exhausted.

These moments are the ones I’m tempted to operate in doubt, worry, fear, or self-sufficiency, forgetting I have a present Father. But the truth is, we are never alone. The promise of God’s presence is active and available to us every moment of every day.

Genesis 31:3 says, “Then the Lord said to Jacob, ‘Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”

The last five words in this verse change everything. I will be with you. The same promise God made to Jacob is the same promise He makes to us.

When you’re fearful. I will be with you.

When you’re discouraged. I will be with you.

When you’re in a season of waiting. I will be with you.

The promise of God’s presence shifts our perspective.

He dismantles our fearful thoughts, doubts, and insecurities and replaces them with confidence, power, and hope in Jesus’ name.

Mama, you are loved by a Heavenly Father who will never leave you. You are His, and He is yours, today and for eternity.

Your Fellow Able Mom,

Lord, thank you for your constant presence. Draw near to us today and always. We love you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflect:

1. How does the promise of God’s presence encourage you today?

2. What bold steps of faith do you feel called to take after reflecting on the promise of His presence, knowing you’re never alone?
